Title: Your decorating/building tips
Post by: macthekat on June 16, 2008, 03:19:55 pm
Do you got a tip you want to shear with the rest of us for building or for decorating. Is there something you always do or some objects you like to put together? Perhaps a combination for colours? The best tips will be featured in the magazine.

If you got a picture to illustrate the top, then it is even better!

For me, I have a tips  a use when I have to create wild garden area, is to put flowers and grass everywhere, '' ŕ l'aveuglette'' without looking and with the cheats boolprop snapobjectstogrid false. I love to mix a lot of style, of plants, and finally the results can look like this : (http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/4336/jardinyd5.jpg)

A small tip from me: don't mess up your rooms too much. They turn unrealistic with all this clutter. I mean, who wants or has a room that's so messy? Not me!  :)

Make a concept before you decorate your room. Then put in the main fabrics ( a great painting, a sofa, even a mirror etc) that will inspire you. then you could put the other fabrics on too. This is an easy way to mach the objects with each other

Add storage things.  Like drawers and baskets under beds and tables.  It looks more realistic because then sims look like they have "stuff" too...and not just furniture.  :)

Use nature/city murals behind windows to make the room more realistic and photogenic!

I like to have my room full with clutter. I tried to do the same irl. But I'm just a neat freak. So.. most of my sims houses are full with clutter ;o

A tip from me..
Uh.. Don't use those dark colored sidings all together.
For example : Red along with Yellow ( or other wrong combinations ). It just gives me a feeling like a Clown family lives over there :-[

What you mean is... don't yous primary colours together right? Like bold red, blue and yellow - it does look like a toy store or a clown's house

well a tip for the colors is to concentrate maybe on a special color combination and do nothing addtional...often it also good to combine maybe a colorful object with not so colorful to make this object to the visual center of the room...maybe combine orange or somethinglike that with brown or grey tones...

also often a good decision is to bring the color into your rooms with walls ...maybe only a part of the wall become red and right and left it is white...

because of furniture i really like to make style mixes...for example old and new...modern stylish and ordinary...something like that this i really like...maybe over a designer diningtable an old chandelier---i like that...

well i think this was it^^

But I also like to decorate with similar colours

If its to strict add a contrasting colour

I think accent walls are a must in most rooms. Whether they are patterned wallpapers or just solid colors it makes a room look fuller and more thought out.

A lot of outdoor (stone) walls and floors look great inside a house, and you can also combinate them with most other (indoor) walls. The result can be very unexpected and nice!

I try and find a center piece, like a sofa or maybe a statue. Then I base my room around it. Sometimes its hard, but then I just undo and choose something else (: -Jellytots

Some people are truly amazing and come up with very original and realistic floor plans and home exteriors on their own - I'm not one of them.  ;D

So I get a little help from a few sources - floor plan websites like globalfloorplans.com and architecturaldesigns.com, as well as MLS listings (real estate listings which usually include an exterior shot and some interior shots, if not actual floorplans) to get ideas for both floorplans that are realistic and have good flow, and how to make the 'curb appeal' better. :)

For interiors I like sites like Better Homes and Gardens and other design focused websites. :) I'd buy magazines more often but hey, internet is cheaper! Another good idea is to look at home decor companies websites, like IKEA. They often have pictures on their websites of rooms set up.

One thing that can instantly give your lot a bit of depth or realism is a little terrain paint in the right places.  It can be tricky and easily overdone, I avoided terrain paint for a long time as I found it a bit awkward.  A tip I read at MTS suggested putting a little soil paint at the base of exterior walls all the way round the building, the effect is quite dramatic considering how little is done.  That's really how I started using terrain paint, it really does create a more natural look.  It's great for making a pond look like a pond, without the need for loads of stones and plants, and ideal for curved pathways.  If you can get matching floor tiles and terrain paint then that can take some of the work out of it.  I'm lucky enough to have a graphics pen and have found that a lot easier to use when applying terrain paint.  I wish I had some pictures to show what I mean but I've only just started getting into taking pictures from the game and don't have any to illustrate my point.  Just go to it slowly with little bits at a time, undoing mistakes as you go and being careful not to over do it-less is more.

Think about the character who is going to live there: it's not the same a family with lots of children or a single. Hobbies are a good point too, they focus the attention, and when you are fond on a hobbie, it reflects in your house. An artist will have lots of paints, or sculptures, or music... and a technician would like a clean house and its tools at hand.
